Limited edition hardback of THE OREGON TRAIL by Francis Parkman, illustrated by Thomas Hart Benton and published by Doubleday, Doran & Co, Inc, Graden City, New York in 1945. Signed by Benton on the limitation page. Number 782 of 1000 copies printed.

The book is in very good condition with slightly grubby boards, lettering faded on the spine but is in otherwise very presentable condition. Gilt top page edges. No dust jacket as issued, but I am not sure if there should be a slipcase. Internally the pages are clean and tight and there are no tears or other inscriptions.

The book is a first-person account of a 2-month summer tour in 1846 of the U.S. states of Nebraska, Wyoming, Colorado and Kansas. Parkman was 23 at the time. The heart of the book covers the three weeks Parkman spent hunting buffalo with a band of Oglala Sioux.

Thomas Hart Benton (April 15, 1889 – January 19, 1975) was an American painter and muralist. Along with Grant Wood and John Steuart Curry, he was at the forefront of the Regionalist art movement. The fluid, sculpted figures in his paintings showed everyday people in scenes of life in the United States. His work is strongly associated with the Midwestern United States, the region in which he was born and which he called home for most of his life. He also studied in Paris, lived in New York City for more than 20 years and painted scores of works there and also painted scenes of the American South and West.

328 pages illustrated with 15 colour plates, including the title page.
