Kirstein was the brother in law of Paul Cadmus.
Cadmus (1904-1999) was known for his realistic often gritty depictions of the urban environment he knew as well as male portraits which often emphasised the erotic nature of the male body as you might expect from a gay artist.
Kirstein was a philanthropist and founder of the New York City ballet.
